situation report: samos

Samos Youth Centre

From early 2019, we’re opening a Youth Centre on Samos, addressing deteriorating conditions and an immediate need for safe spaces outside the camp at Vathy.
Our Youth Centre (Yugi) comprises non-formal language education, IT and cooking classes and vocational training, all tailored to refugee youth.

project overview

In response to this worsening situation, we are opening a Youth Centre modelled on the success of our centre on Chios. An essential safe space outside the camp for 15 - 22 year olds, we offer non-formal education and psychosocial support through a blended model of timetabled classes and peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

The centre will run 6 days a week catering for 150 asylum seekers with a focus on unaccompanied minors and youth up to 22. Our qualified team of volunteer teachers and youth workers strive to provide an alternative to the reality of the camp.

the Youth Centre

The Youth Centre will offer a safe space for refugee youth up to 22. It seeks to create an environment and atmosphere that allows the teenagers to develop trusting relationships and confidence in their own abilities and skills.

The teenagers improve their conflict management, non-violent communication and group-based decision-making through social integration and skills-based activities. With integrated language lessons in Greek and English, as well as project-based learning, the project delivers non-formal education in a context that promotes and ensure psychosocial support.
